Mobile Training & Custom Courses

Mobile Marine Training

Transport Canada marine courses for commercial vessel operators are mostly delivered in large coastal centres. Many students who reside in remote locations that require certification, do not have local TC instructors available and therefore require travel and additional expense in acquiring instruction in larger centres. This can be costly. FMI can bring our mobile training facility to remote regions providing student certification in their local community.

Custom Scheduled Marine Courses

Marine training institution schedules cannot always accommodate an organization’s requirements for SVOP and related certification. FMI can work with groups to customized a flexible schedule plan that can include a combination of days, evenings and weekend to get the students certified.

Note: we currently offer a monthly evening course, for students who cannot afford to miss work. View course schedule.

SVOP for Pleasure Craft Operators

Owning your own boat does not have to be an intimidating experience and should be fun! However, ensuring you are properly prepared and knowledgeable on how to operate a vessel in all conditions is paramount. Preparation and knowledge are critical to avoid risky situations, personal danger, expensive damage and repair bills.

The SVOP course (Small Vessel Operators Proficiency course) is a designated Transport Canada certification required for all commercial mariners to operate a smaller vessel up to 5 gross tons. The course provides 26 hours of theoretical instruction and includes, but not limited to, training in seamanship, weather, tides and current, marine emergencies, boat handling skills, collision regulations and much more.

The skill acquired through the SVOP course can equally apply to a pleasure craft operator.  Whether you seek a commercial mariner’s certification or simply to be a competent pleasure craft operator, the skill provided in the SVOP course can be a great starting point to develop a foundation of seamanship skills necessary to operating your own vessel.  The course can also assist in seeking a reduction in your vessel insurance.
